Are pets allowed on Turkish Airlines?

Usually, airlines allow small pets in the cabin. Only cats or dogs and small songbirds are eligible. The pet must be within an airline-approved crate or carrier till the time you reach the destination. Larger service animals may be allowed only with conditions. Here are several things pet policy Turkish Airlines require you to understand.

  • If there are flyers on the flight with allergy to pets - You may have to board before them.
  • A flyer may not take a dog if there is a cat booked on the flight - Carriage of cats and dogs on the same flight is restricted.  
  • Pets must be at least 12 weeks old at the time of travel - A veterinary certificate is needed in case the pet is younger.

How do you make a pet reservation on Turkish Airlines?

You may reserve or purchase pet carriage on Turkish Airlines website or mobile application. You will need to submit your ticket number or reservation code and the surname of the passenger. Payment of pet fee may be made at the airport with your credit card. Here are a few tips you will find helpful with making pet reservation.

  • In cabin, a pet carrier up to 23x30x40cm in size may be accepted - Larger or heavier carriers are acceptable in hold.
  • Only soft-sided pet carrier will be accepted in cabin - Hard-edged pet carriers are accepted in hold.
  • Combined weight of the pet and carrier should be 8kg or less - For weights beyond 8kg, you will have to check the pet in the hold.
  • You may travel with 2 pet carriers - In that case, you will have to check one in hold.

Do I have to make a pet reservation on Turkish Airlines?

Pet reservation is not optional for cats, dogs or small songbirds meant only for leisure. You will have to reserve the pet carriage on website or mobile application of Turkish Airlines. Turkish Airlines pet policy gives you an exemption in some cases.

  • Psychiatric service dogs - For travel between Istanbul and US, you may not have to make a reservation.
  • Service animals - No reservation is needed but you must confirm the reservation up to 48 hours before departure.
  • Search & rescue dogs - In times of disaster or emergency, they need not be reserved.

What are the charges for pet travel on Turkish Airlines?

Charges to be paid for travel of pets depends on whether the airlines expects your pet to travel on-board or in hold. The minimum in-cabin charges are $75 in addition to the ticket’s price. As per Turkish Air pet policy heavier pet carriers will require you to pay higher fee. Take a look at the charges you may have to pay.

  • Total charges will be sum of the charges of each segments - If you have a stopover, you will have to pay additional charges.
  • Charges to be paid for travel in hold - You will have to pay $150 or upwards for checking a pet carrier weighing over 8kg.

Do I need documents for pet travel on Turkish Airlines?

Documents needed for pet travel will depend on whether you want to travel with a cat or dog. Here are the documents you may require.

  • Pet’s rabies vaccination must be completed at least 1 month before travel - According to Turkish Airlines' dog policy you may get the vaccination done up to 12 months prior to departure.
  • Original laboratory report of the cat’s or dog’s vaccination must be shown - The report must state the level of rabies antibodies in your pet’s blood.
  • Documents needed for cats - Cats must be vaccinated against Feline Enteritis and Feline Influenza.
  • Documents needed for dogs - Dogs must also be vaccinated against Parvovirus, Distemper, Hepatitis, and Leptospira.
